About heading

As my art work tends to suggest, surfing is my passion.  Twenty-five years of experience as a surfer of the world has opened my eyes to the magic of the waves, allowing me to capture the beauty of the water and coastal scenery in my own style. Travelling the globe, I have searched for the world’s best surf breaks, not only to surf, but also to paint.  In some remote locations, such as in Spain and Mexico, I have been able to support myself with my art when times were tough.

I am a self-taught artist, nurtured since my childhood by my dad, Donald Swales-Smith, who is also an accomplished artist.

In the past 5 years I have begun to live my dream.  I can paint, not because I have to, but because I want to.  I am currently an artist-in-residence in the small surfing town of Marion Bay on the Southern Yorke Peninsula, South Australia.  You can find me there at Studio Surf working on my latest paintings when there’s no surf.

Although I specialise in painting waves in my preferred medium of acrylics on canvas at this time, I am also proficient in other mediums, including pastels and oils.  I have also been known to paint historic buildings, portraits and a mural or two.

Exhibitions of my work are an infrequent event as my original paintings tend to sell as fast as I paint them.  However, I often paint custom paintings for interested people.

I can turn your favourite surf break or beach into a work of art.
